What book of the Old or New Testament has generated the most commentaries in the history of the Church? Not John’s Gospel, not Paul’s letter to the Romans, not the prophet Isaiah, no, it is the Song of Songs. It is a book that is unknown to many Catholics, and shocking to those who discover it for the first time because of its descriptions of a lover and his beloved—God is only mentioned once and that is at the very end.

And yet the greatest of the Fathers have commented on it. Origen’s is the classic and St. Jerome says of it: “Origen, having surpassed all of the interpreters of all the books of Scripture, surpassed himself in this interpretation of the Canticle.” St. Bernard of Clairvaux, St. Francis de Sales, St. John of the Cross, all have added to the great tradition of interpreting this book for they see it as God’s love for Israel and the Church, Christ’s love for Mary, for the Church, and for each of us. Title: Excellent study. A true gift to the reader.

Review: This is really a wonderful book. The Song of Songs is a truly wonderful set of poems (actually one poem). Sometimes we do not read it because we don't understand it. Arminjon fully explains it from the perspectives of the Bride being ancient Israel, Christianity, the Church, the soul. I think one should start with the love poem or wedding song reading and then consider those deeper readings.

The relationship between God and the soul is one of love. Seeking, finding, suffering separation, finding again, loving.

The Song is quoted in its entirety and then, in each chapter, the part to be studied is quoted again, so you do not have to shift between two books. Of course, you may wish to compare your translation or original Hebrew with the version used by Arminjon ' s translator. The point is a reawakening of our understanding of God's love.

Review: I thoroughly enjoyed reading the Song of Songs a while back, so when my cousin told me to pick this up, I did so without hesitation. I only read a page or two of this, and I'm excited to get to it after reading through my current 'spiritual' books :)

Review: There are many scriptural commentaries on the Song of Songs, but very few are able to synthesize an orthodox presentation of both academic and supernatural graces contained in a living encounter with the Word of God. This book nourishes both the intellect and soul with truth that has been poured out upon the Church throughout the centuries. I would recommend this book for personal prayer in addition to an excellent guide in higher academic studies of scripture.
